Meteer will accelerate AVIOS’ mission to advance applications of speech and dialog technologies by bringing together industry stakeholders RALEIGH, N.C., August 5, 2020—Dr. Marie Meteer, senior research scientist at Pryon, an AI company focused on augmented intelligence for the enterprise, recently took the reigns as president of the board for the Applied Voice Input/Output Society (AVIOS), the speech industry’s oldest organization devoted to moving language technologies into the commercial mainstream. Dr. Meteer, an AVIOS board member since 2014, succeeds Bill Scholtz, a respected industry influencer and accomplished practitioner for the last three decades. Founded in 1981, AVIOS is a non-profit organization whose board represents a number of internationally recognized experts from companies and research institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, IBM, Interactions, and SiriusXM. “I have big shoes to fill; Bill had a rare combination of 30-plus years of experience and a forward-looking understanding of where the field is going,” said Dr. Meteer. “This is an exciting time to lead AVIOS. Our industry has never been more important, and we all have a significant role to leverage natural language technology to improve customer service, increase employee efficiency, optimize products and services, and to simply understand the hidden information in unstructured voice and text data.” As senior research scientist, Dr. Meteer is speeding the development of Pryon’s enterprise AI solutions. The company recently announced Pryon Answers, the first commercially available insight engine that lets anyone easily and quickly benefit from customized, sophisticated, and targeted AI. “We’re on the precipice of groundbreaking advances in speech language technology that will further transform how we work and connect,” added Dr. Meteer. “It’s a thrilling time to be part of this industry and work for a company that has a grand vision for the future of work and enterprise AI.” A leading thinker and innovator who is actively creating new tools and approaches for dialog, speech, and natural language processing, Dr. Meteer is also fostering the next generation of talent. She was an associate professor in computer science at Brandeis University, where she continues as an adjunct, teaching speech and dialog in the Computational Linguistics Masters Program. “One of my goals is helping AVIOS grow and be more visible, particularly among younger professionals by encouraging them to be actively involved,” explained Dr. Meteer. Continuing AVIOS’ long tradition of creating opportunities to connect developers, researchers, and users to advance speech and multimodal technology, its Bots and Assistants Conference and Demo Derby will be held virtually, November 9-10, 2020.
